Consultancy

I’m pleased to offer consultancy in the following areas:

  • Creative Leadership
  • Game Pillars, Ideation, Production Planning & Pitching
  • Narrative Design, Game Storytelling, Game Writing

I take a people-centred approach to all of my work. All teams and projects are different, so I spend time gathering what’s important to the people who make up the team, as well as what the project needs, as I co-define a brief for my consultancy work.

I have provided short consultancies (3-5 days reviewing materials and offering feedback), and longer (3 months supporting a pre-production process to provide the company with a roadmap to development). I’m a sought out lecturer, speaker and mentor in the areas of creative leadership and story in games. I can work in almost all timezones, and offer timely well-documented processes, and outcomes that suit all needs and most budgets.

If you’d like to talk to me about how I can support your game and team’s development, reach out on contact [at] hannahnicklin.com

Testimonials

Hannah […] helped us clarify and prioritize our ideas, and established a pattern of making sure the whole team felt & were heard throughout the process. […] We worked together closely on a structural outline of the game. […] Importantly, this outline didn’t try to cover every detail in advance, but provides a narrative structure for us to plan and build the game with clear goals in view, and ensure the story is told and supported from beginning to end. “

“Hannah brought insight and clarity to the project that helped the whole team get on the same page. She made this a fun and fruitful experience and I would eagerly recommend working with her on future projects.”

– Jake Elliott, Cardboard Computer

The jump from being a narrative designer to the creative director of a video game felt like I was climbing Everest without Oxygen. Working with Hannah as a consultant helped me to break down what felt like an overwhelming challenge into active and solvable pieces. She gave me tools to streamline my communication struggles, challenged me to think about diverse types of players/collaborators, and above all – provided me with a customized plan that gave clarity and empathy for the creative process as an experienced storyteller herself.

– Sam Butin, On The March

Hannah has been an instrumental part of our narrative talent development efforts for some time. […] Whether  through a workshop building off her exemplary textbook Writing for Games or during more project focused deep dives, Hannah has provided unique insights into the way both our junior and more experienced developers think about and handle storytelling. Next to being super professional and always willing to proactively think along, she’s generous with her time and knowledge, that as a former studio director extends beyond the narrative department. I’m very much looking forward to continue and where possible broaden our collaboration moving forward.”
